The New Jack tour recently rolled through Atlanta to rave reviews. The tour
showcased two of the 80’s and early 90’s best R&B groups: Guy and Tony, Toni!
Tone! However, at the top of their games, bickering and larger than life egos
caused members of both groups to go their separate ways.
Guy’s first two albums, “Guy” and “The Future” were instant classics. Not
only did they invent the New Jack sound, but also the Hip Hop/ R&B format
that is heard today. Teddy Riley was the super producer of the time, working
with everyone from Janet Jackson to Al B. Sure.
Aaron Hall was as highly regarded as Teddy. Remember when we weren’t sure if
Aaron said “dumb bitch” in “Goodbye Love?” For one reason or another, Guy
decided to breakup. Teddy had a bit of success with Wrecks N Effect and
Blackstreet, but then faded into oblivion. Aaron Hall held his own with his
solo debut. Remember when everyone was saying that R. Kelly was biting his
style with the bald head and goatee. Soon after, Aaron‘s career fizzled too.
Poor Damien Hall never had a chance on his own.
Tony! Toni! Tone! was arguably a better group than Guy.
From the moment “Little Walter” hit the airwaves, they established
themselves as a unique group that not only sang, but actually played
instruments. We could write a separate article on all of their slow jams:
“It Never Rains,” “Anniversary,” “Slow Wine,” and “Lay Your Head on My
Pillow,” just to name a few. But, for one reason or another, they decided to
split-up as well. We thought that Raphael Saddiq had promise as a solo
artist, but it just hasn’t worked out for him.
Aside from Michael Jackson and a few others, Hip Hop and R&B
groups seem to have far more success as a group than they do as solo artists.
The moral of the story is if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Hopefully both Guy
and Tony! Toni! Tone! Will get back in the studio and produce some more hits.
